From the New York Times:<P><B>'Unfolding': The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company Speeds Ahead</B><P>By JACK ANDERSON<BR> <BR> <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Only one of the three works by Nai-Ni Chen that her Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company presented last Saturday night at the Joyce SoHo was called "Unfolding." But that title was appropriate to two offerings by this troupe, which is based in Fort Lee, N.J. <P>The piece officially titled "Unfolding" began with some dancers curled on the floor while others walked cautiously among them. Then everyone came vibrantly alive to recorded music by the Hanulsori Korean Percussion Ensemble. The tempo occasionally slowed, only to accelerate and send everyone speeding ahead with increased vigor, tumbling and whirling like endlessly proliferating forces of cosmic energy. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P><BR><A HREF="http://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/30/arts/30WEB-CHEN.html" TARGET=_blank><B>MORE...</B></A><BR><p>[This message has been edited by Basheva (edited June 30, 2001).]

I danced with Nai-Ni in the 80's with Chen and Dancers, based in NYC. It's amazing to see how far she's come!! Yay!!

Footnotes: Taiwanese Choreographer's Craft Is Bound By Its Own Beauty

By EVA YAA ASANTEWAA
The Village Voice

Nai-Ni Chen's Unbroken Thread feels like a big dream with "scary" archetypal elements that actually exhilarate rather than terrify. Dancers are secreted within or attached to a mass of thick, knotted ropes (designed by Myung Hee Cho), spilling from the theater's overhead grid, that become props, delineations of space, definitions of relationship.

Cheverly's Publick Playhouse sprang a leak Friday night. Streams, rivers and rain inspired many pieces presented by the New Jersey-based Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, a group known for fusing traditional Chinese and modern dance.

From Marcia Siegel in the Boston Phoenix:

Combat and rain - Nai-Ni Chen at John Hancock Hall

Taiwanese choreographer Nai-Ni Chen danced with Cloud Gate Dance Theater ..., and her work, like theirs, is a suave amalgam of traditional Chinese elements and modern dance. Chen’s company of 10 dancers appeared Saturday night ... sponsored by the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts. The program demonstrated how the traditions can nourish contemporary dance, with practical tools like movement and symbolic objects as well as philosophical and literary themes.
