Contemporary dance on tap

Dance companies across the nation rely more on ticket sales and individual donations than they did 10 years ago. The current economic slump could reduce earned income by as much as 30 percent. So says a report released this month by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Houston's small companies mirror national trends. They're surviving, but not growing.

Contemporary ballet company founder Sandra Organ says the last two years have been "really touch and go." Corporate donations have evaporated and individual support has nose-dived.
