Jennifer Dunning article in the New York Times:

quote:
In this first engagement since Sokolow's death in March at age 90, the company will focus on the final two decades of her career and a relatively unfamiliar body of work. It is in many ways a trip into the past and toward the future for the Mays.

MORE

I am just thrilled that Anna's work is living on through the Mays via The Players Project. I worked with Anna at Juilliard in the 80's (and premierd in a couple of her later works staged for the Dance Divison there), and studied with the Mays at Harvard Summer School in l977. Small world!! It's so wonderful to see artists with real integrity and "honesty" continuing and producing work. Wonderful, wonderful!!!! Important! This gets my New Years off to a great start!

Your experiences sound very interesting trina. I can see an article there for you to write, when you get the chance.

I really don't know if you want a new thread for this of not - so here goes:

This is a New York Times review by Jack Anderson.........
ANNA SOKOLOW'S PLAYERS PROJECT; THE LONELY LIVES OF ARTISTS

quote:
Throughout her long choreographic career, Anna Sokolow championed the lonely and the oppressed. Although she died at 90 in March, her company, Anna Sokolow's Players' Project, continues under the direction of two of her dancers, Jim May and Lorry May. Last weekend the troupe presented a brief engagement at the Theater of the Riverside Church.

MORE

...... focusing on current interpretation of Anna's work, for example as currently being done in NYC by Players Project:
Anna worked in Mexico and in Israel (in Israel with a company called Inbal)during her lifetime, and as a result reached an international audience.
Her works were also featured on the Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and the Jose Limon Company, among others.
Has anyone seen the Players Project season in New York? Or perhaps have seen Anna's work on another company?
[This message has been edited by grace (edited January 13, 2001).]
