At the Bregenz Festival in Austria this summer, Brandstrup and theatre director Phyllida Lloyd will adapt Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, in which the sickly Usher siblings inhabit a decaying mansion. Brandstrup hopes to excavate a backstory for their unnerving decline, which Poe never explicitly elucidates. The production will enhance this sense of clammy mystery through Debussy's unfinished opera score which suggests "a claustrophobic world... psychological anguish. Debussy is all atmosphere. There's space to reconstruct in your mind what happens."
