Two reviews of a contemporary dance company from China. As Donald Hutera tells us: 'Formed in 1992, Guangdong Modern Dance Company is a fresh embodiment of that cliché "East meets West". One of China's first professional contemporary troupes, the 11-member ensemble made their British debut at the Brighton Festival last week.'
Both reviewers are very impresssed with the dancers and enjoy some of the work.
Do Chinese companies visit Australia or the States?
www.guardianunlimited.co.uk/reviews/story/0,3604,221282,00.html

http://www.the-times.co.uk/news/pages/tim/00/05/16/timartdan01001.html

Here is the link to the dance section of The Brighton Festival
http://www.brighton-festival.org.uk/listings.asp?artform=dance
[This message has been edited by Azlan (edited March 15, 2001).]

The company is in the US. Here's a preview from New Jersey:

quote:
A modern first for China
ELLEN DUNKEL, The Record in New Jersey
Modern dance first came to the United States around 1900 with Isadora Duncan and contemporaries.
It didn't come to mainland China until nearly a century later -- in 1990 -- with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, which is performing at Manhattan's Joyce Theater next week and at New Jersey Performing Arts Center and McCarter Theater in Princeton later this year.

More

From the New York Times:
MODERN AND CHINESE: NO OXYMORON FOR THIS DANCE TROUPE

quote:
UNTIL the 1980's, modern dance was a mysterious art form in China, existing underground, if at all. The Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first modern troupe in China, did not present its official debut concert until 1990, but its roots go back to 1986, when Chiang Ching, a choreographer, performer and former actress, was asked to judge a choreographic competition in Beijing. Ms. Chiang accepted the offer in the hope that the winners would gain scholarships to study at the prestigious American Dance Festival. The scheme worked.

Interesting. I've never seen this Chinese company in Hong Kong. I can recall another that I reviewed 2 years ago - the Beijing Modern Dance Co.

A review:

quote:
Guangdong Modern Dance Company Thrills Audience
Scott C. I am astounded by the few reviews I've read....it seems unbelievable that the country where "Tienanmen Sq" happened would allow this subject matter (as per the reiviewer; we can't always be positive of the intent of the choreographer)to be explored. Individuality vs. society, homosexuality, blending eastern and Western forms! Incredible! This is truly amazaing! Only since 1990 has modern/contemporary been introduced into China, and then only via a very few select individuals through ADF...one wonders how how those very limited influences will "percolate" over time so to speak, and the cultural brew which is formuated will really be "somthing to see"!! Wow!!!

Guess what???? Guangdong is coming to the West Coast. A message I received from ODC Off-Site (the performances will be at the Cowell Theatre in SF and Meany Theatre in Seattle):

quote:
On October 18-20, the Guangdong Modern Dance Company will be making their California debut. Formed in 1992, Guangdong was the very first modern dance company to come out of China. They have since paved the way for modern dance in a country where traditional dance prevailed.
Though they have been to New York City and various other US cities, this will be Guangdong's first time in San Francisco and I'm thrilled that ODC is a part of this spectacular event.

Here is a preview article that appeared on Friday, October 5 for performances scheduled October 11-13. Regrettably, the Chinese government has not allowed the company to leave China, ostensibly due to the increased risk of terrorist attacks. Their performance has been replaced in Seattle by the Urban Bush Women performing "Hair Stories." This cancellation is so, so sad for SF. I know ODC and theater manager Andrew Wood had been working like crazy to bring them here for more than a year now, and it was to have been the innagural engagement for a new presenting program. Andrew deserves our sincere thanks for his thwarted efforts.

Bummer. I was so looking forward to seeing them. Yes, Andrew Wood and the ODC Theater deserve much credit for their efforts in presenting Guangdong in SF, which would have been the lynchpin of the now aborted tour.
I wonder if they can turn this into something else, like FallFest 2001 or something.

Just got word that next Thursday's gala concert for Guangdong in SF will be turned into a "concert for peace," with at least one company, ODC/SF, already signed up.
