I'm not an expert on Butoh by any means, but I always considered it "modern" or "contemporary" in the sense that it's post WWII and definitely not "folk" dance.<P>Certainly cultural influences are drawn upon in Butoh, but Martha Graham et al. drew on cultural influences as well, as we all do. It could be considered Eurocentric to class Butoh as "other," while US dance pioneers have been called "modern". Anyway, just something I've been thinking about...

Very good point, Marie. Butoh is afterall an expression that came about in the "modern" world, partially, as a reaction to the horrors of global war and genocide.
