Press release

Dance 4 presents Cie Willi Dorner

"Mazy"

Touring from 22nd May 2002

Award winning Austrian Choreographer who's work has been described as
'a glimpse into the future of dance' brings his ensemble of five dancers to the UK on a national tour.

Having trained in Vienna and New York with the likes of Stephen Petronio, Dorner has been creating work for the last ten years forming his own company in 1999. From their studio in Vienna the company successfully tour nationally and internationally. Mazy won Dorner the Austrian Dance Production Award 2000.

'With its astonishing concentration on pure forms of movement Dorner's Mazy offers an intriguing glimpse into the future of dance.' Salzburger Nachrichten

Five dancers and a square of gaffa-tape outline the parameters for a series of solos and duets. The dancers purposefully mark out the performance space in which they explore how the body moves in relation to itself. A solo woman dances with her head as though it were detached from her spine, rolling it around her shoulders and arms. Another simply stands and describes the choreography she would perform were she moving. Male duets with insense physicality engender aggression with subversive tenderness.

Based on French phenomenologist Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of embodiment, the choreography demonstrates that by seeing another person's struggle we illuminate ourselves. The piece is a sensual and tender experience and despite its philosophical underpinning is coherent and accessible.

'He crafts these encounters with seamless dynamic, gutsy and self assured movement and even some tender moments.' Josephine Leask, The Place London

The UK tour of Mazy is produced by Dance 4 and supported by the Arts Council of England and the Austrian Cultural Forum.
