Here is a message that I have placed on some UK sites. It may be of interest to those in the US who have enjoyed seeing Rambert perform in the past or hve enjoyed Christopher Bruces's work for US companies such as Houston Ballet. These workshops provide an opportunity and a platform for the Rmbert dancers to try their hand at choreography or, for the more experienced, to prepare new work. I'm looking forward to the event.
*****************************************
Bargain of the decade! For £5 you can see some of Rambert's finest dancing in work by members of the Company including Didy Veldman and Raphael Bonachela. It takes place in the new Lilian Bayliis Theatre which is reached through the stage-door of Sadler's Wells. Tickets are obtainable in the usual way from the Sadler's Wells Box Office on 0171 863 8000.
Here is a Press Release from Rambert about the event, together with some info. about the Rambert Proms season at Sadler's Wells in May-June.
RAMBERT WORKSHOP SEASON LILIAN BAYLIS THEATRE Tuesday 29th February - Thursday 2nd March at 7.30pm
Since the Company's formation in 1926, Rambert Dance Company has famously nurtured the development of choreographic talent from within its ranks, from Frederick Ashton and Antony Tudor to the Company's current Artistic Director, Christopher Bruce. Continuing this tradition, Rambert presents a Workshop Season of new work, created and performed by members of the Company.
Because, by RAFAEL BONACHELA, was first seen at last year's Isleworth Festival, and is included in the Workshop Season together with a new work, A Pesar de Todo (In Spite of Everything). Bonachela's assured choreographic debut, Three Gone, Four Left Standing - created for the Company's 1997 Workshop Season, was performed by Rambert at Sadler's Wells in May 1999. Because also features as part of this year's Resolution! dance season at the Place.
JAN de SCHYNKEL's What You See or What You Get received its premiere at last year's Resolution! Having been awarded the 1999 Peter Darrell Choreographic Award, de Schynkel recently created a new work, She is as He Eats, for Scottish Dance Theatre. Following its premiere in Dundee in January, the work features as part of this year's Resolution!
DIDY VELDMAN's works for Rambert include Kol Simcha and Greymatter, performed by the Company at Sadler's Wells last November; in 1998 she created Carmen for Northern Ballet Theatre. Veldman has created a new solo work for the Workshop Season, which she performs herself. Later this year, she will create a new work for Rambert, sponsored by the Linbury Prize for Stage Design.
GLENN WILKINSON's new work for Rambert's Workshop Season follows Brown Ballet One, which featured in the Company's touring repertoire in 1997/8. In the last year, Wilkinson has choreographed for Rambert's Summer School students and Sadler's Wells Youth Dance Group.
Rambert's Workshop Season also features new works by Company dancers LAURENT CAVANNA, PATRICIA HINES, ANA MARIA LUJÁN SANCHEZ and CONOR O'BRIEN.
Rambert returns to the main house at Sadler's Wells for its London Season from 31st May. In two mixed programmes over two weeks, the Company presents its PREMIERE of Merce Cunningham's Beach Birds; the LONDON REVIVAL PREMIERES of Embrace Tiger and Return to Mountain and Pierrot Lunaire by Glen Tetley; and three popular works by Christopher Bruce: Ghost Dances, Meeting Point and Four Scenes. The season marks Sadler's Wells' first promenade performances, with standing space offered in the front Stalls for less than £5 a ticket during Rambert's opening week.
RAMBERT WORKSHOP SEASON: LILIAN BAYLIS THEATRE Tuesday 29th February - Thursday 2nd March at 7.30pm Tickets £5 from Sadler's Wells Box Office: 020 7863 8000
