Terpsichore isn’t Anna Myer’s only muse. Since the Cambridge-based choreographer founded Anna Myer and Dancers in 1992, her work has developed along two distinct threads.

The first pays a kind of orderly homage to Apollo, while the second, reckless and dreamy, is certainly encouraged by Dionysus.

I’ve been watching Myer’s dances for 10 years, and I feel that I can make that aesthetic delineation with security. Over time, her ever-growing repertory has provided me with more than just food for thought - a multicourse feast might be a better description.

Myer didn’t dismiss the notion when we spoke earlier this week, though it became apparent as our conversation progressed that for her, romance has always been the dominant theme.

Choreographer Anna Myer has never pandered to expectations. Just when you think an elegant turn or soaring leap will lead into a phrase of unabashed balletic grace, the energy pulls up short and the line is subverted by a tilted head, an oddly bent leg, or a stiff arm ending in a curled-in, clawlike hand. While it can be a little disconcerting and not always viscerally satisfying, it does keep the audience attentive. There's the constant anticipation that whatever comes next is something we will not have seen before in quite the same way.

Soon another woman appears, identically dressed in a dark color. The second woman seems to be the shadow of the first, copying her movements but maybe a breath later. They lie on the floor side by side, scootching down as if they were settling in to sleep. The dance that follows might be some half-recalled dream of theirs

The dancers were on the move - which is, of course, to be expected - but so were the 12 string players from the Juilliard School. As a result "All at Once" was visually unusual, and emotionally satisfying. At moments, the dance steps seemed to make the musical phrases visible while the musicians' bowing arms appeared to be doing dances of their own.

Unless they're making it up as they go along (and differently for each performance), they're serving as stagehands, not set designers.
