Review: Chris Black's 'Pastime' makes pitch

A confession: I don't like baseball. Certainly not the way choreographer and Potrzebie Dance Project director Chris Black does. Her "Pastime" premiered Saturday at Justin Herman Plaza and takes the home field again soon at a park near you.
A self-confessed former Yankees pitcher wannabe, Black has carried out her new site-specific dance with fanatical care, from the transistor radios blasting a charmingly static-filled broadcast of the work's score to the meticulous mimicking of a pitcher's twisted torso and cocked leg before the position melts, with dancerly drama, to the ground. She's also taken a dark quote from Willie Mays as inspiration: "Baseball is violence, under wraps."
