Judith Mackrell journeys to Aix-en-Provence (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it) to interview Angelin Preljocaj about the visit of his company to London with ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and its links with the mood of the novel ‘1984’.<P> <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Romeo and Juliet was actually commissioned back in 1989 by Lyons Opera Ballet, when Preljocaj was barely known outside the small world of experimental modern dance. Here is the Ballet Preljocaj website. There are video extracts of several of his works and as always you have to be doing other things while they take time to load and you need Zip to read them. But it's worth it, as the 1 minute extracts are good quality and a decent size if you go for the bottom option with the largest screen size. It sounds remarkable, if rather daunting. Preljocaj is an intermittant visitor to the UK, following disasterous audience figures for a terrific programme here 6 years or so ago. However, his great success with 'R&J' last year in London should ensure a return before long. Goodie!

There will be screenings of Preljocaj videos this and next Tuesday evening (2/6 and 2/13), 7pm, at the Yerba Buena Center Screening Room in SF. I believe Preljocaj himself or a representative of the company will present as well.<BR>
