'Mauvais Genre' by Alain Buffard Opens at Danspacemore...
by JENNIFER DUNNING for the New York Times
Alain Buffard is a French choreographer who considers himself to be a product of American modern dance. ...
"Mauvais Genre" ("Bad Type") opens with a handsome, eerie tableau of the dancers standing, nude, behind hanging fluorescent lights, a mug-shot lineup without the faces showing. Slowly, eventually, they tape their genitals and then put on pair after pair of underpants, which figure zanily in the grand finale, before moving out onto the stylishly empty stage floor to cluster in slapping, huffing groups, depositing candlelike flashlights around them. Just as that is lasting too long, the dancers disperse to the sides, strap small pill bottles on their heels and pick up prescription-medicine boxes.
