Opera House - Takkelloftetet

Choreographic 'playpen' for ballet dancers

A ballet dancer is one, who as a rule, is a tool for an instructors or choreographers ideas. Thus, the choreography workshop is an opportunity for the Royal Ballet's dancers to themselves create works - and even with professional dancers, namely the company's other dancers. For many of today's highly-reputed choreographers, the workshops have been the first difficult step towards a career as a choreographer. Choreographers including Tim Rushton and Louise Midjord have created their first pieces in these workshops.

This year, there are two debutants and three who early have choreographed smaller works in other contexts. While Constantine Baecher, Esther Lee Wilkinson and Erling Eliasson already have created works for dancers, Ulrik Birkkjær and Iain Rowe are definately debutants.

Ulrik Birkkjær created "Guess" when he had been a corps member for little over a year. The title is a direct request to the audience that they themselves guess a title. The music for the work is a combination of things as different as an American jazz trumpetist, a gangster rapper, a synthesizer professor from NYC, Catalonian folk music, a mandolin player with a speciality in bluegrass and not least our own Bent Fabricius Bjerre. According to Birkkjær the music is quite different, but it is selected via a particular criteria:

"For all the composition it applies, that they are a very strong expressions within their own musical area. So instead of taking a musical work, I have combined a series of strong moments so that they become bound together by the dancing."

In the same way, Birkkjær has combined the dancers to focus on their different expressions and personalities.

Koreografisk kravlegård for balletdansere

Bl.a.
