Press release (my translation first)

By Peter Martins after Petipa, Ivanov and Balanchine

Main stage, Opera House
Repremiere – Sunday December 3, 2006 3pm

"Swan Lake" moves in to the Opera House

For many people "Swan Lake" is the incarnation of classical ballet. The image of 20 white swans around Per Kirkeby's forest lake unites beauty, melancholy and elegance to a degree that burns into your retinas. And which something whole new Peter Martins set up with this classic ballet drama experiened on the main stage in the Opera Hosue.

The drama contains all the major emotions – undying love, filthy deception and gloomy sorrow – and with Tchaikovsky's beautiful score played by the Royal Theatre Orchestra.

And the music, is for the New York City Ballet's balletmaster Peter Martins, a dominant starting point.
"The inspiration comes first and foremost from Tchaikovsky. I know well that "Swan Lake" originally was a comissioned-work, composed for a libretto, but the music has been stronger than the story, which has often been changed and interepreted.

Principal dancer Kristoffer Sakurai will debut in the role of Prince Siegfried for the re-premiere, where he will dance opposite principal dancer Caroline Cavallo. The part is a dramatic and technical challege of the highest degree, and though Kristoffer has, in recent years, proven himself in many big roles – for instance James in "Sylfiden", Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet" and the solo male role in "Etudes" – this part is a milestone for every young dancer.

For Balletmaster Frank Andersen it is always a special experience to attend "Swan Lake""

"The ballet's ballet. And so there can only be talk about one – namely "Swan Lake". We all know the music – Tchaikovsky's undying score from 1877 is the perfect example of classic ballet music. Our version of "Swan Lake" became a major success at the premiere in 1996 and now there is the possibility to show it again – this time in the new opera house on Holmen.

The sets were made by the world-famous Danish painter Per Kirkeby and it is particularly in these designs that one can see the original four acts. Kirkeby followed the story's dramatic development in costumes and scenery: from the golden, merry life of the first act to the love-charmed forest, which is followed by the starched royal ball with heavy baroque costumes and so back to the forest, which has now become the lost forest.
