BALLET PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET BY HENRY LEUTWYLER
“Ballet: Photographs of the New York City Ballet”, is a book by Henry Leutwyler that is the culmination of four years of collaboration between the internationally-renowned portrait photographer and the New York City Ballet.
After several years of collaborating with the Company on its advertising and promotional campaigns that featured studio portraits of all of NYCB’s dancers, Leutwyler was granted unprecedented backstage access to the theater and rehearsal studios at Lincoln Center. 30 days of photography during NYCB’s 2012 winter and spring seasons has resulted in a 488-page book featuring 270 photographs.
The book begins with pictures of daily Company class led by Peter Martins. It then moves on to images taken in rehearsal studios and dressing rooms, culminating with a series of photographs taken from various backstage vantage points during performances of more than 20 works by Balanchine, Robbins, Martins, Ratmansky, and Wheeldon. The final section of the book features nearly 60 of Leutwyler’s original portraits of the dancers, some of which are being published for the first time ever, including images of all the Company’s Principal Dancers.
In conjunction with the book’s release, an exhibition of the photographs will take place at New York City’s Foley Gallery in Chelsea (see below for details).
