Fort Worth Dallas Ballet Artistic Director Ben Houk Leaving Company

quote:
``After very forthright and honest discussions, Ben and the committee have decided to part ways,'' said Ms. Knouse. ``While there have been some artistic differences, this separation is mutual and amicable. I personally appreciate the contributions Ben has made to the Ballet.'' ``I am grateful to our audiences and have enjoyed working with David Mallette, the staff, the Board, and especially with our extremely talented dancers for the past three seasons,'' said Mr. Houk. ``Although we have decided to end my role as artistic director, my commitment has always been the same as the Company's -- to put the very finest work on stage. I will carry with me very good thoughts of the excellent work we have done together. I wish the best to everyone at the Ballet and good fortune for its future.''
Mr. Houk will remain through the end of the 2000-2001 season in May in an advisory capacity. He will be pursuing available artistic directorships in the field and important goals for his family.

Hmm.... ‘very forthright and honest discussions’ - I would have liked to be a fly on the
wall for that meeting.

http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20010202/3039143s.htm
Stuart adds in response to Azlan below - have you no imagination? Houk may have been the caddy!

[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited February 04, 2001).]

Houk's bio from the FWDB web site:

quote:
Benjamin Houk is in his third season as artistic director of Fort Worth Dallas Ballet. He came to FWDB after two years as artistic director of Nashville Ballet. He has performed with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Joffrey II, as well as numerous guest and gala appearances. Lauded as a "true movement artist" by Lar Lubovich, Houk has danced many significant contemporary roles and essentially all of the great classical roles, including alternating with Fernando Bujones as Albrecht in Giselle. Houk has a long list of choreographic credits, including work at Pacific Northwest Ballet, Nashville Ballet, and the University of Washington as well as pieces seen in Santiago, Chile, and Edinburgh, Scotland. Recent choreography includes Rite of Swing, Passacaglia, The Nutcracker, and this season's Shout. He has staged a number of ballets including Coppelia, and major elements of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream. He has performed and choreographed in a variety of other live and recorded mediums including a Microsoft CD-ROM and PBS's Bill Nye the Science Guy. He has taught ballet and composition in numerous schools, academies, and universities including locally, TCU, SMU, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Houk served as the assistant director of PNB's arts in education program, has lectured for The Kennedy Center's Imagination Celebration and has recently served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.

This is not good news. Ben is a friend of mine of long standing. This shows signs of a board that is panting after a "name" (e.g., Bruce Marks). Their treatment of Ben (and Debbie Hadley, who left last May) seems rather lacking in class.
