One of the most important ballet companies in Latin America, Ballet Teresa Carreño (BTC), presented a mixed repertoire last weekend at the Teresa Carreño Theater, in Caracas.

Interesting ... after former Artistic Director Vicente Nebreda passed away in 2002, this company has not had an Artistic Director. This is due to socialist governmental cultural controls.

The first piece was "Guaraira Repano", choreographed by Mariela Delgado, a contemporary work danced by 10 members of the BTC. It is a homage to the City of Caracas, depicting the relationships between man and nature. ("Cerro el Avila" or "Guaraira Repano" are the mountains surrounding the valley of the City of Caracas). The music, by mexican composer Arturo Márquez, was a "Danzón", with clear Afrocuban influences.

The next 3 Pas de Deux : Passion, Romeo and Juliet, and Diana and Acteon, were danced by members of the BTC and invited guests, Viktor Ishchuk from Ukraine, and Norbert Nirewicz ( from Poland.

The Kingdom of the Shades
Nikiya and Solor were brought to life by principal dancers Cristina Amaral and Norbert Nirewicz. The corps was well rehearsed and the original choreography was not altered. The Golden Idol was performed by Humberto Rodriguez, whose jumps and turns delighted the audience. The trio was danced by Maria Melogno, Alejandra Martinez and Danniza Sabino, all of them young venezuelan dancers, with strong classical technique and beautiful lines.

The evening was accompanied by Orquesta Sinfonica Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, flawlessly directed by young talent Antonio Delgado.

Oh hey, Cygnet, welcome back to the fold!

And I have a question: if BTC does not have an AD, who's in charge?

The company is directed by a team called Artistic Coordinators.
