In a conference hosted by Mayor Jerry Brown (yes, *the* Jerry Brown), Oakland Ballet named Karen Brown, formerly with Dance Theater of Harlem, as their new artistic director. Brown replaces Joral Schmalle who had been acting Artistic Director since the retirement of founder Ronn Guidi.
Here is the story in the SF Chronicle:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2000/04/26/DD106458.DTL&type=performance
And here is the story in the Contra Costa Times: http://www.hotcoco.com/timeout/stories_feattop/x26oakball_20000426.htm

Oakland Ballet is known for its revival of old non-Balanchine classics by choreographers such as Nijinska, Lew Christensen, etc. I wonder how Brown's varied background will change this. I also wonder if she will be successful in addressing Oakland Ballet's financial problems.

I am DELIGHTED that a woman was named director of a good regional company...I don't have time at the moment to read about this in-depth, but will check out the various websites later...the "glass" ceiling has been broken...I am DELIGHTED........(yay)

Good point, Trina. I wasn't even thinking about that. Having several friends in the Bay Area who are women Artistic Directors, I didn't realize that this may be a big deal in the rest of the world.
Meanwhile, SF Examiner's Allan Ulrich thinks Karen Brown will need to be on her toes:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/examiner/archive/2000/04/26/STYLE4014.dtl
The reward to going to the above link is a photo of Ms Brown.

Azlan --I need to clarify what I said--I can't think of any major BALLET companies which have had women artistic directors--at least not in this country. (Marcia Haydee at Stuttgart was artistic director, I believe, after being major star there for many years).
Contemporary/modern dance, as a contrast, has had the historic tradition (martha graham, doris humphrey) of strong female pioneers, indeed women have seemed to predominate there.

Good point, Trina. Perhaps we could start a new thread on women ADs?

I think Trina's point, sadly, is that it would be a short thread and most likely dominated by your geographic region.

Here is an interview with Karen Brown, almost one season later, by Octavio Roca of the San Francisco Chronicle:
"Karen Brown - Dancer in the Driver's Seat

"It's a new era," Karen Brown said recently. She means it.
The woman in charge of Oakland Ballet has planned a fall 2001 season that is as varied as it is ambitious, a celebration of the company's rich if embattled past as well as a hopeful step forward to a future of ballet surprises. But Brown's season announcement is only part of the story."
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/04/04/DD198587.DTL
