Summer on the San Francisco dance scene means slimmer pickings, so the chance to get a ballet fix in June can raise hungry hopes.
In 2005, Richard Gibbs, the supervising physician to the San Francisco Ballet, threw together a showcase called "Choreographers and Friends"; last year, in its second incarnation, it looked like it might become just the thing to tide over balletomanes in the dead months before fall. The choreographers included two heavy hitters, Julia Adam and Val Caniparoli, and their "friends" constituted an all-star roster culled from Ballet San Jose, Diablo Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and beyond.
If only Gibbs would recruit a few more dance-making talents and cut back on the preponderance of his own featherweight works, he might have a yearly must-see on his hands.
