A feature on Welch, in relation to BalletMet:

Ballet director faces new sex claim
by DEBORAH JONES for the Australian

THE Australian artistic director of Houston Ballet, Stanton Welch, has been accused of sexually harassing a principal dancer in his company, 10 years after a similar incident was reported at the Australian Ballet.

Welch "strenuously" denied the earlier allegations, which were revealed in 1998.

Interesting that this should come out in Australian papers, but apparently (?) not in any Houston papers...

It's hard to know what really happened - ballet involves so much physical contact, with a closeness between 'employees' that much greater than in any other workplace. And it's a body-centered profession - ballet is about the body in all it shapes, sexes, forms etc. Some people speak more freely than others, some people interpret comments differently from others. And artistic directors tend to have a control that is unknown in most workplaces...

This brings to mind two things...

One, I happen to be well aware of Kip Gamblin, having seen him in "Home and Away" and because he's about to start in one of the big UK hospital soap operas, "Casualty". None of the stories on him ever referenced his real reason for leaving AB - he danced with Western Australia Ballet and Sydney Dance Company before turining to acting. I wonder whether this is the kind of story he wants to surface just as he's starting a new job.

Also, one might remember the case at ABT with David Richardson several years back - almost exactly the same accusations. In that case both David Richardson and the dancer departed ABT.

I feel it's a shame that this has been made public - it's such a touchy subject and no-one but those directly involved know what really happened. Here's to hoping that the press leaves it alone and let it be decided in a civil and fair way. (I presume, Houston Ballet being an AGMA company, that there are union procedures for such claims.)
