It's so nice to hear all of your comments about SFB's recent performances.
Azlan, I have a question. If you did attend SFB School's performance last year, do you happen to remember a student by the name of Clara Blanco Casquette? She was a '99 Prix de Lausanne winner and I hear she might be joining the company from this fall. I just wanted to know how she has "grown" since the last time I saw her at Lausanne. Thanks very much.

I'm sorry, I didn't attend that performance (yes, that's right, I actually missed a dance performance!). Perhaps someone else did.

William Glackin writes a review in the Sacramento Bee:
"SAN FRANCISCO -- Julia Adam is one of the many formidably excellent leading dancers of the San Francisco Ballet. She is also a choreographer: Last season, her "Night" reportedly had a highly successful first performance on the company's "Discovery" series of new works."
http://www.sacbee.com/lifestyle/news/lifestyle05_20010405.html

Well, DavidH, it seems the critics are backing you up in regards to Julia Adam's "Night." And they also share our lack of enthusiasm for Petit's "L'Arlesienne." It is interesting to note that Octavio Roca makes no mention of "Night" and "Symphony in 3M" at all...
And this is what I wrote of SFB's performance of "S in 3M" last season:

quote:
The intended sexy slinkiness of "Symphony in Three Movements," danced to Igor Stravinsky's composition, is apparent immediately

More

Roca just went on and on about the Petit. Why? I don't know. It's an okay work and I'm not sure why he considers it a masterpiece. Oh well...............
This is a review by Rachel Howard who also had problems with Petit's choreography:

quote:
Nothing but heartaches
Rachel Howard, SF Examiner
For a long while nothing much changes in Roland Petit's 1974 work "L'Arlesienne," which entered San Francisco Ballet's repertory Tuesday night.

And further down in the review, she makes specific mention of Christopher Stowell's farewell performance:

quote:
Stowell, a member of the company since 1986, will be back April 20 to dance a special farewell smattering of works, including Balanchine's "Tarantella," to be sprinkled within SFB's program seven. Stephanie von Buchau wrote of the score in Julia Adam's Night, "The commissioned score by Matthew Pierce ought to be recorded by the SFB orchestra conducted by Scott Speck. It's a winner on its own..."
Well, guess what? My good friends at Voice of Dance tell me it will be available at their store in the near future:
www.voiceofdance.com/store/store.cfm
[This message has been edited by Azlan (edited April 08, 2001).]

Was SFB's presentation of "L'Arlesienne" that dissatisfying? A lot of critics didn't seem to like Petit's work, but I didn't think it was that bad when I last saw it with the Marseille Ballet. Perhaps his "Carmen" might have done better with the company, and Lucia would make an excellent Carmen too.

Terry, to answer your earlier question, SFB has confirmed that Clara Blanco, winner of the 1999 Prix de Lausanne will indeed be joining the corps de ballet.
However, Blanco is recovering from injury and will not begin performing until next season.
