Details for one half of New York City Ballet's Southern California performances in Fall of 2004 have been officially anounced. This half is the Orange County run, Sept. 29 to Oct 3. (The other half, in Los Angeles at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from Oct 6 to 10, is planned but details haven't been anounced yet.) The planned repertory for Orange County looks very exciting, with a good mix of Balanchine "classics" and a program of NYCB's newer material as well (with a nice tutu-type Balanchine piece thrown in, just in case...):

Wed., Sept 29 at 8 p.m.
Jewels - George Balanchine / Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Thurs., Sept 30 at 8 p.m.
Serenade - George Balanchine / Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Stravinsky Violin Concerto - George Balanchine / Igor Stravinsky
Stars and Stripes - George Balanchine / John Philip Sousa

Fri., Oct. 1 at 8 p.m.
Polyphonia - Christopher Wheeldon / Gyorgy Ligeti
Thou Swell - Peter Martins / Richard Rodgers
Symphony in C - George Balanchine / Georges Bizet

Sat., Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
Jewels - George Balanchine / Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Sat., Oct 2 at 8 p.m.
Serenade - George Balanchine / Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto - George Balanchine / Igor Stravinsky
Stars and Stripes - George Balanchine / John Philip Sousa

Sun., Oct 3 at 12:30 p.m.
Rubies – George Balanchine / Igor Stravinsky
Stars and Stripes - George Balanchine / John Philip Sousa

Sun., Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m.
Polyphonia - Christopher Wheeldon / Gyorgy Ligeti
Thou Swell - Peter Martins / Richard Rodgers
Symphony in C - George Balanchine / Georges Bizet

(Also worth checking out: Orange County's 2004-2005 dance season, which starts with NYCB, goes to a week of ABT mixed rep, then Matthew Bourne's company with "Nutcracker," and then the returns of Alvin Ailey and the Eifman Ballet. Full details here)

Thank you for this information, art076! Looks like a good reason to schedule a trip to LAX.

Francis,

If you can get a flight to John Wayne in OC instead, you'll be a hop, skip, and a chasse away from OCPAC.

Art,

Thanks for the info. It looks like I will have to stay overnight in OC for the whole weekend.

Art,

Wow, and thanks! I'm looking forward to spending both weekends watching the company. The Music Center hasn't yet announced their 2004-2005 season, so this is quite a scoop, too.

This may prove to be a better weekend for me than the previous weekend at OCPAC....

I hope this doesn't sound too snide. But putting "Thou Swell" Rodgers/Martins on the same programs with the likes of "Jewels", "Polyphonia", and "Stravinsky Violin Concerto" is like putting a dwarf amongst giants.

Agreed, rogelio. Especially sandwiched as it is between "Polyphonia" and "Symphony in C." But it looks audience friendly - they will eat it up the same way they eat up ABT's Beatles ballet.

Wow. Thanks, Art! I am looking forward to both weekends. Both weekends are similar but sufficiently different enough that they should draw serious balletomanes to both!

Hi!
Thanks for posting the casting! I'm without internet in my flat until my return from Copenhagen in early October, so my internet access has been rather patchy!

Once hooked up to broadband, I will try to keep up with postings here and on the other NYCB threads!

I look forward to reading about the NYCB performances in California. Of interest are Stephen Hanna in Tschai PdD and, if he does dance, Damian Woetzel's return from a long illness.

Kate

This casting for OCPAC is exciting!
Seeing Weese debut in "Serenade" and Woetzel in Stars and Stripes, also Fairchild and Bouder in 'Emeralds" as well as Tess Reichlin in "Rubies." I will be there Wed, Thurs and Friday evenings. Wish I could make it to L.A. as they are performing a few pieces not on the OCPAC programs. But we will be out of town.

This is the longest I remember NYCB performing here in Orange County. I hope that they bring in full houses and do well. It would so great to see this company on a more regular basis on the West Coast. I did notice a poster at the local grocery store advertising 10% discount on NYCB tickets for any week night performance. So those of you who have not gotten seats, it sounds like there is still time to buy with a bit of savings too! :D

I'm most looking forward to seeing Ashley Bouder again. She was the highlight of the company for me when I saw a few performances in New York this past May; when she's dancing, she dives into the roles with an uninhibited, fearless attack - which makes things exciting and keeps you on edge (in a good way).

But either way, the reps are very good - its a ton of great Balanchine all compressed into a very short period of time.
