Oberlin-based dance troupe leaps to the Play House

Ohio Dance Theatre is celebrating its 10th anniversary by moving to a new home. The Oberlin-based company will launch its residency at the Cleveland Play House next week with performances of artistic director Denise Gula's musical theater production, "Journey: The Story of Umoja."

The ensemble will return in June to present a summer series consisting of "Cinderella," a repertory program and a story ballet to be announced. "Journey" will be performed in the 400-seat Drury Theatre. The summer shows will be in the 550-seat Bolton Theatre.

Ohio Dance Theatre has spent the last few seasons fishing for a format that would appeal to Cleveland audiences. Although the Oberlin-based company has a loyal following in Lorain County, it did not enjoy box-office success during two summer seasons of story ballets, contemporary repertory and a comic murder mystery at the Cleveland Play House.
