Hmm, this bit caught my eye:

quote:
I was pleasantly surprised to see Edward Villella, the founding artistic director, sitting on a stool in front of the first row speaking with the audience about the state of the arts in America. The intimidation factor, often present at the ballet, was nonexistent.

I wonder if Villella does this all the time. I wonder if other Artistic Directors do this.

I saw the Miami City Ballet a few years ago quite by accident. I have season tickets to the ballet season at Orange County Performing Arts Center - and one of the scheduled companies was unable to fulfill it's commitment - so Miami City Ballet was invited. They were terrific!! I was very impressed with them in every way.
Many years before that Edward Villela came to San Diego at the invitation of Linda Yourth (she was also from NYCB - had been part of Nureyev's Dancers Summer Tours and taught here for many years) for a lecture demonstration at the Unvisity of California. He struck everyone in the audience by his ease of approach, his friendliness, sense of humor and general likeability. So I am not surprised that he would do this as posted above. He also wrote a very engaging autobiography.

Here's what I thought of MCB the first time I saw them. They performed "Jewels":
http://www.criticaldance.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000004.html

Interesting about the Villella post-performance discussion. He did exactly that when MCB was here in Seattle a few years ago. The other AD who has done this with some regularity in my observation is Mark Morris....
