Arnold Ready to Try New Dance Steps
BY CELIA R. BAKER, THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

quote:
Bene Arnold doesn't mind juggling careers, and she likes to reinvent herself every so often. The grand dame of Utah's ballet scene is retiring from her 27-year career teaching in the University of Utah's dance department, but Arnold doesn't intend to relax. She will continue her work as children's dance mistress with Ballet West and has a list of projects to do. Not surprisingly, most have to do with her life's passions -- ballet and education. Arnold had glandular tuberculosis as a child and couldn't attend school until she was 10. Despite the slow start, her avid interest in learning propelled her through her schoolwork, and she finished high school at 16.
She started ballet at 10 as a form of physical therapy for her illness, which was arrested, but never cured. Arnold still has to pay attention to her health and budget her energy. That hasn't kept her from bold accomplishments.
