In Oakland Ballet's tradition of reviving historical works, the company will be performing Carlos Carvajal's "Crystal Slipper" this coming weekend. From their press info:

quote:
Repertory Program Two
Friday, October 20, 8PM
Saturday, October 21, 8PM
Sunday, October 22, 2PM
Crystal Slipper - Carvajal/Martin├╝
An irresistible reach into the archives - Carlos Carvajal's Crystal Slipper is a much loved tale of rags to riches, of a young woman's struggle and transformation into a beautiful princess. It has "magic galore. Cinderella's gown, jewelry, crystal slippers, coach and prancing steed materialize in a captivating series of events". (San Francisco Chronicle) Celebrate the legacy of Oakland Ballet and be swept away into the fantasy.

Has anyone seen this work?
Reviews as they become available to follow.

Did I say historical? Oops. This ballet was created in 1977 and is based on "Cinderella."

Image
Oakland Ballet's Mario Alonzo

First impressions... there were a few treats for the ballet enthusiast: the surprise casting of Carlos Carvajal himself and AD Karen Brown as the King and Queen; Mario Alonzo's virtuosic performance as the Jester; Erin Yarbrough's pretty dancing in the finale's pdd.
Reviews to follow.
BTW, Grace, Carvajal danced with SFB, among other companies. He also founded the now defunct Dance Spectrum and is now AD of Peninsula Ballet Theater.
[This message has been edited by Azlan (edited October 21, 2000).]

I have not heard of Carvajal either or Martinu for that matter. Is Martinu the composer? What type of music was it? It's an odd choice not to feature music by a famous composer (Tchaikosvky comes to mind).

I know nothing of this dancer Carvajal - but the name itself is ancient and historic. Would be interesting to know if this dancer is from this illustrious family.

The music by Martinu wouldn't be my first choice. It is not like the beautiful scores by Prokofiev or Tchaikovsky that one normally associates with a fairy tale ballet. Except for the finale, the music would be tedious to most youngsters or casual ballet-goers.
