CAPTURE
Enter a new dance environment
First UK tour of screen based dance installation and new media work

Visitors to the first ever Capture Installations Tour will be entering a brand new art domain: dance working at the interface of technology and new media.

Collaborations between filmmakers, video artists and dance practitioners will blend sound, movement and image to offer audiences total sensory immersion. Some of the works are interactive, extending the experiential possibilities still further.

The Tour presents a selection of works created in response to an Arts Council England annual commissioning scheme, initiated in 2001 to develop the contemporary dance genre. The dance moment, the physical performance - usually seen live for a split second and then gone forever – can in this format be captured and suspended, worked and re-worked, sampled and offered up for audience interaction.

Perhaps the most radical work is ‘Men in the Wall’ by choreographer / performers Liz Aggiss and Billy Cowie whose roots are in both cabaret and punk. Their life-size installation disorients the viewer, since the 3D dance figures seem to be in the room rather than on a screen. This manipulation of space gets to the very core of the Capture concept – staging dance at one remove from live performance.

Portland Green, Tour producer and curator of the upcoming fourth year of the Capture commissions, said: "While the dance content in these installations will appeal to dance lovers, we are also hoping to reach a new audience that normally gravitates to the visual arts, computer gaming and the club scene.”
