Director raises the barremore...
by JACQUELINE PASCOE for the Australian
Gielgud, peripatetic international performer and director, is back in Australia to revive her acclaimed production of Giselle, originally created on the Australian Ballet in 1986 while she was artistic director.
Her 14 years here in her first company directorship remain the longest period she has stayed anywhere, and the decade since her departure has been punctuated by three significant appointments, each of which she terminated early. It must feel as if she is returning to a safe harbour, then, coming back to mount her work on the company she was associated with as its longest-serving director, and whose present director, David McAllister, is a former protege of whom she is "very proud".
