Simone Clifford, Australian ex-dancer and now choreographer and dance writer, has won the Sir Robert Helpmann Prize for ballet choreography at the Australian Institute of Classical Dance (AICD) "Dance Creation" Choreographic Competition, held every two years at a major theatre in Melbourne.
Clifford, who wins A$5,000 for her work "Another Perfect Day in Paradise", said:

quote:
"The artist's ultimate critical recognition comes when his peers surrender primacy unto him / her. Whilst we, as creators may be misunderstood on many occasions, when our own fellow artists recognize the validity of our work, then we are fulfilled".

clifford's reviews may be seen at danceinsider.com, and are usually linked from criticaldance. for example, see her provocative review of forsythe, kylian and tharp here:
http://www.criticaldance.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000366.html
her biography is supplied here:
quote:
Simone's professional career began as a dancer with the Australian Dance Theatre in 1982 under the direction of Jonathan Taylor. A repertory company, it regularly invited guest choreographers. It was during this period that Simone met Glen Tetley and upon his suggestion Simone eventually auditioned for the Nederlands Dans Theatre and was immediately invited to join the company in the January of 1986. Once under the artistic direction of Jiri Kylian, Simone's understanding of choreography deepened. Throughout the time Simone spent with the company Jiri acknowledged her creative input toward his own choreography. Jiri invited Simone to choreograph on N.D.T.II and Simone then went on to choreograph a pas de deux for Sabine Kupferberg and Gerald Jibbs of NDT 1.
In order to develop her creative voice further Simone left N.D.T at the end of 1991 and her career as a freelance choreographer began. Commissions in Canada, Australia and England followed. With the birth of her son in 1994 Simone return to Australia and settled in Adelaide. In 1995 Simone founded the project company, Simone Clifford Dance Projects, which employed eight dancers and produced a body of work which premiered in the 1997 Made to Move season in Adelaide.
In 1998 Simone received a two year Australia Council Fellowship in support of her work. During this time successful collaborations have occurred with both West Australian Ballet and the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, igniting an awareness of Simone's work in Australia. Previously known to Australian audiences as a leading contemporary dancer, Simone is now acknowledged for her choreography. Her work is becoming more and more attracted to the structural discipline of dramatic or musical forms. At a more critical level, this formalism is better understood in geometric or even architectural terms rather than the structural conventions of classical ballet. This may not reduce the mystical nature of her creation but it affects an unsuspecting audience in theatric terms; which means the audience may reach a stage of catharsis.
She currently lives in Melbourne with her son.

[This message has been edited by grace (edited October 03, 2000).]
