Chinese ballerinas pirouette for 'Sylvia'
By Chen Jie for China Daily

The National Ballet of China has presented new productions of varying styles, and all have received excellent reviews, from "The Red Detachment of Women" to "Yellow River," from the "Fountain of Tears" to "Coppelia," from "Raise the Red Lanterns" to the "Rite of Spring."

The 2004/05 season will see "Sylvia," a co-operation with the Opera de Paris.

It will be staged five times at the Centennial Memorial Hall of Peking University from September 30 to October 4, before it goes to Shanghai for the 2004 Shanghai International Arts Festival in November.

The National Ballet of China will open their Hong Kong tour on 24 November with this production of Sylvia, followed by an all-Balanchine evening as their second programme.

By the way, I noticed that the company is one of the finalists for the Best Foreign Company category in the UK National Dance Awards.

After last week's Hong Kong tour, the company will tour Shenzhen and Macau before returning to Beijing in mid-December. They will host a special 45th anniversary Gala on 29 December at the Great Hall of the People. Several Russian stars are due to appear in the gala. More details later.

Thanks Azlan. I have also written a features piece on the company in the 17 December edition of the Asian Wall Street Journal. As the Wall Street Journal's website can only be read by paid subscribers, I won't put the link up.

The company's website has some photos taken during the tour to Macau.

Two photos show Suzanne Farrell visiting the company in Macau, and teaching company class. Hope that Ms. Farrell can stage another Balanchine ballet for the company in future.
