“Tivoli”, a co-production between Sydney Dance Company (SDC) and the Australian Ballet (AB), looks like being a real show-stopper. Never before have the Australian public seen these two companies work together in such an adventurous capacity.
From its world premiere on May 18 (in Melbourne) the AB's ballet dancers will don tap shoes for virtuoso routines, a 70+ year-old veteran of the Tivoli will return to the stage to make us sigh in disbelief at his continuing ability to turn heads and SDC members will perform alongside AB dancers in acrobatic numbers from original Tivoli productions -- numbers you might otherwise expect to see Cirque du Soleil perform (touring Australia during the Tivoli premiere).
The Tivoli Circuit was where Australians showcased variety theatre, with dancers, comedians, ventriloquists and acrobats performing alongside scantly clad bombshells. Graeme Murphy’s dance musical is a story beginning just after the turn of the 20th Century. It draws on real-life drama as well as ‘Murphy-drama’ to take audiences on a journey spanning several decades.
“Tivoli” will surely draw new audiences to the Australian Ballet and will continue to “knock the socks off” SDC’s already large group of faithful followers. I plan to see it in two cities!
See ‘program’ under this link: http://www.sydneydance.com.au/ for more

[This message has been edited by Jennifer (edited April 29, 2001).]
