An ambitious 'Swan Lake'
By Mieko Sasaki / Special to The Daily Yomiuri

Swan Lake has long been a touchstone for classical ballet. With its solid narrative, K-Ballet Company artistic director Tetsuya Kumakawa's version carefully develops the noble romance between Prince Siegfried and Swan Queen Odette. In addition, in the role of the Prince, Kumakawa conveys his character's emotions with richness.

Put to Tchaikovsky's dramatic score, Swan Lake revolves around Odette, who is placed under a spell by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart that turns her into a swan during the day, and Prince Siegfried, who attempts to break the spell by pledging eternal love for her. Conflict ensues when Von Rothbart's daughter, Odile, disguised as Odette, tricks the prince into declaring his love for her.
