As we bid goodbye to the wonderful image of Miki Orihara and Tadej Brdnik in Martha Graham's Embattled Garden, which has adorned Criticaldance's front page for 2 months (now archived in our gallery), we welcome our latest cover image, courtesy of photographer Robin Chee and Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT).
Xia Hai Ying (on top) and Kuik Swee Boon -- their names follow the surname-first tradition in Chinese names -- are the dancers featured in this photo. As some of SDT's most featured, most experienced dancers, they have taken on principal roles in full-length story ballets like Giselle, Coppélia and Petal Miller-Ashmole's The Red Shoes, as well as main roles in the one-act ballets that the company is more noted for.
This particular photo was taken in 2000, during a performance of Jeffrey Tan's Façade (1999) at SDT's popular "Ballet Under The Stars" (BUTS) season, an outdoor performance series held at the lawn on Fort Canning Park. Set to Samuel Barber's familiar "Adagio for Strings", Façade was most recently performed this month for this year's BUTS season.
For more samples of Robin Chee's photography, visit his website.
