I saw Wheeldon’s Cinderella on 15 December at Amsterdam’s Music Theater. I wholeheartedly agree with Laura Cappelle’s statement that “Cinderella’s merits are often more theatrical than choreographic.”

Another reviewer, Lorianne van Gelder, succinctly stated: “Now and then, the choreography lapses into moments of acting..., and you want to shout ‘Just get on with the dancing!’”

I agree with van Gelder, too, This is ballet. And in Cinderella, I expect to see, for example, beautiful pas de deuxs between Cinderella and the Prince. Somewhat disappointingly, the choreography was less than captivating, and, as a consequence, I didn’t feel the love between the characters.

Nevertheless, Wheeldon’s Cinderella is worth seeing, if only to see an extremely well performed theatrical production of Cinderella.
