While on tour in Japan, Stephen McRae gave an interview to Danielle Demetriou in The National (a publication from Abu Dhabi).

Who could argue with this?

Quote:
“During the Margot Fonteyn era, ballet was a glamorous world and dancers were treated like old-fashioned movie stars,” he says. “Today, the whole celebrity world has become really trashy. You appear on a reality show for a day and you’re famous. But I hope that when the trashy celebrity scene dies off, people will once again respect real artists for their true talents.”

Couldn't agree more, I hope the new enterprise helps to make a few more people aware of the art. Not sure of the merits of fashion designers at the ballet though as I seem to remember a gala evening at the ROH back in the 90's when a whole swathe of very famous designers got to design the costumes, the results were very mixed with one designer (Versace I think) producing a Firebird costume so jewel encrusted it made partnering impossible and had to be ditched.

Good to read the thoughts of Mr McRae though; I've always admired his dancing but in the past year I've detected a new maturity in his work, he really does go from strength to strength.

Wow! An impressive list of projects and aspirations - let's hope we can keep Mr McRae in the UK, both for his dancing and his future goals.
