The young ballerina Dorothée Gilbert has been appointed to the rank of Etoile just a few minutes ago, after having danced her first Clara (=Marie) in Rudolf Noureev's The Nutcracker.

This performance of The Nutcracker was danced without any costume, due to a strike of POB's employees.

Although unfortunately not available on line, there is a full-page article about Dorothée Gilbert on page three of today's Times together with a large colour picture of her in what appears to be a Bayadere costume.

The article praises Ms Gilbert's dancing while noting the inauspicious circumstances of her promotion to etoile as the theatre was half empty due to transport strikes and the ballet bereft of costumes and sets because of strike action within the theatre.

Strikes are a way of life in France as earlier this year I attended a performance in Paris of La Fille Mal Gardee where Alain was unable to 'fly' because of a stage dispute and a couple of years ago a performance of Giselle I had gone to see was cancelled due to strike action. A pity travel insurance doesn't exist including compensation for cancelled and disrupted performances.

That is really a pity the strikes happen while the ballet is performing The Nutcracker, as we can imagine many families from everywhere in France or abroad had planned to attend these performances.

About Dorothee Gilbert's nomination, in France, we have so far at least 2 short articles on the Net... but no full page  !

Well done @urelie! when I looked I couldn't find a link but you are clearly better at these things than I am. I have to say the picture of Gilbert on line is a much nicer one than the one in yesterday's paper.
