Since the story itself is so episodic, how could a ballet version be otherwise? And once your enthusiasm is thwarted by any of the many leaps embedded in its picaresque plot there is little to lure you back into the loop. Does this matter? Judging from audience response, no, it does not.

The trouble with Carl Davis's patchwork job is its lurching sense of scale: the symphonic buffetings of The Tempest set next to slender pieces intended for parlour piano. Somehow, you feel, Tchaikovsky would have smoothed out the bumps. Visually, too, the production is patchy.
