Ballet audiences in Swansea have become so accustomed to the traditional classical Russian style as performed by the Grand’s own in-house company Ballet Russe, that this sharp and contemporary retelling of the bewitching Shakespearean fantasy must initially have come as something of a surprise.

Newport-based Independent Ballet Wales is a predominantly young and forward-thinking company whose productions combine elements of modern dance, physical theatre, mime and drama in addition to more conventional balletic techniques.

How about Hamlet without the words? Independent Ballet Wales is a dynamic and beguiling young ensemble that has made a fine art of conjuring Shakespeare’s plays into, at best, electrifying dance.

Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet have both been staged already. Darius James’ staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, currently touring, includes Alex Grant’s delicious Puck, choreographed and danced with sly wit, plus much beguiling teamwork.
