Count me in as a fan of Lacarra. On the other hand, Pierre, as a dancer, leaves me cold. It appears as if SFB had to "buy" them as a pair. I've never seen Pierre give a performance with SFB that was either memorable, terribly focused, musical, or even that technically assured. I think the company has men in the corps and in their solo ranks who are better dancers than him (...and SFB has really deep talent in their corps).
------------------
cheers,
ralph

Thanks ileana for any information on the film. Yes, you clearly can imagine my disappointment at the cancellation.

Well, this is weird, I've always used sfballet.org and it has always worked, including today! I know I once tried .com and it didn't. Oh well, whatever works.

Violette and Mr B" will be shown in NY, at the Alliance Francaise on March 26, for several screenings. There will be a talk with Ms. Verdy and Dominique DeLouche after the 6:30pm screening.
French Institute Alliance Française http://www.fiaf.org/
Anna Kisselgoff writes in the NY Times:

quote:
George Balanchine went out of his way to recruit Violette Verdy into his New York City Ballet in 1958. Anyone who saw her enchanting performances there until 1976 could understand that Balanchine chose her because she was unlike, not like, his usual ballerinas.
Roland Petit, the French choreographer who gave Ms. Verdy her start as a teenager, says it best in "Violette et Mr. B," an 85-minute film by Dominique Delouche that will be shown today at Florence Gould Hall, 55 East 59th Street, Manhattan. Ms. Verdy will speak at the 6:30 screening but not at the others (12:30, 3:30 and 9 p.m.).

Click for More
I hope the Verdy documentary eventually makes its way to San Francisco. Violette Verdy — now THERE was someone with "star" written all over her (as I mentioned in another thread, I’m not a Lacarra fan). I saw Verdy when she guested with SFB many, many years ago -- I think it was still in the Christensen days. She didn't do the Christensen Sugar Plum Fairy variation, but rather, the Petipa version (essentially). She managed to wring more out of it than I would ever have believed possible. And she did the most beautiful, expansive, suspended renversé I’ve ever seen.
I was lucky enough to have her as a guest teacher for a couple of weeks when I was a teenager. She was very down-to-earth, totally unaffected and an absolute treat to study under.
Speaking of documentaries about French dancers, did anyone see the documentary about Jean Babilée at the SF Film Festival a year or 2 ago (or anywhere else)? I missed it at the festival, unfortunately, but thanks to a friend who works for the film festival, I saw it before the festival, on video, before the subtitles were added. My high school/college French enabled me to understand some, but not nearly all, of it. However, one certainly doesn’t need to understand French to enjoy Babilée’s star quality. Dance Magazine wrote up the film:
http://www.dancemagazine.com/multimedia/2001_7_babilee.html
Seeing Babilée perform “Le jeune homme et la mort,” it’s easy to see how he "brought an admiring Mikhail Baryshnikov to his knees."
I haven’t come across a thread on this site about this film. Does anyone know if one exists?

I believe I remember reading that Verdy once had a severe tear in her Achilles tendon - I think both of them? - and managed to rehabilitate and dance again. Quite a feat of determination.
