Emma, thanks for your impressions and for confirming "the Houston Chronicle article that there was a statue of Caesar standing outside 'in the evening drizzle.'" Image

'Cleo's a little on the camp side but the Texan pizzazz makes up for it.'
Jenny Gilbert reviews the two Houston programmes at Sadler's Wells.
http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/theatre/dance/reviews/story.jsp?story=65888

From the Houston Chronicle - somehow I missed this on April 5th:
Houston Ballet shines in cramped Sadler's Wells Theatre
By MOLLY GLENTZER
LONDON -- Is this what it feels like inside a tin can?

quote:
The Sadler's Wells Theatre, where Houston Ballet is performing, is miles away in both spirit and location from the crystal-chandeliered auditoriums of London's West End entertainment district. The only ornamentation here is a pair of large metal panels that double as shields for lights. The walls are painted black, creating the impression right off that dancing is serious business.

All I can say is that Ms Glentzer should have seen the old Sadler's Wells where the stage was half the size of the present one.
I have to say that while it's not a traditional Opera House I rather like the Sadler's Wells auditorium interior. The sister theatre, The Peacock, is really a black box, but it works rather well for dance.

This has nothing to do with the ballet but Graham Heathcote does ask an interesting question:

quote:
Cleopatra exhibit maintains legend of her sultriness
GRAHAM HEATHCOTE, Cleveland Plain Dealer
LONDON - Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, has been a great beauty in story, legend and art for 2,000 years - but was she really such a belle?

More
