English National Ballet have some excellent dancers and a strong following. However, their repertoire over the past few years has been dominated by mega productions of the classics on huge stages such as The Royal Albert Hall; small scale touring featuring mostly bits and pieces from the classics and their annual residence at London's Coliseum, where this year they performed 'The Nutcracker' about 30 times.
Thus it was with some relief that, for the first time in several years, they performed a triple bill at the Coli, if only for 3 nights. The dancers seemed to seize the opportunity with relish and in some cases it was a revelation. Over the two nights that I saw, Daria Klimentova was wonderful in Glen Tetley's 'Sphinx' and both she and Agnes Oakes graced the 2nd Act of 'La Bayadere'. The Estonian Thomas Edur and the Russian Dmitri Gruzdyev were admirable as their partners.
The programme ended with MacMillan's 'The Rite of Spring' and I was pleased that I saw it twice as I needed a second showing to assimilate the strikingly original choreography. The first half showed the corps on superb form with the complex rhythms and in the second half, Tamara Rojo was a haunted and electrifying Chosen One. Back to normal for ENB from today with 'Coppelia'.
Here are some very positive reviews from and the London press:
Lynette Halewood in
Clement Crisp in the Financial Times (only available for about a week)
Debra Craine in The Times

[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited 01-13-2000).]
