EDUCATION IN THE SPOTLIGHT
75TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Rambert Dance Company’s 75th Anniversary Season in London continues with a special production at the Lilian Baylis Theatre on 29 June. Spring Forward / Fall Back unites some 200 Londoners - aged from ten to 70 - in celebration of the Company’s commitment to education.
Since its formation - by the Polish dance teacher, Dame Marie Rambert - in 1926, education has been at the heart of Rambert’s activities. In celebration of this commitment, RAMBERT EDUCATION has mounted Spring Forward / Fall Back, a large-scale performance project reflecting the breadth of its education work in London.
Seven groups began working with a team of artists, teachers and musicians in April. The participants - whose ages range from ten to 70 - are drawn from Rambert’s evening classes for adults and young people; an Arts for Everyone funded project, Centre Stage; children from Copenhagen Primary and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Schools in Islington; BTEC Performing Arts students from Barnet College; and members of the Lilian Baylis Arts Club.
Spring Forward / Fall Back is devised to reflect the skills, interests and ages of all those taking part. Participants have explored the themes and movement of a range of major works, including Siobhan Davies’s Sounding, Jirí Kylián’s Symphony of Psalms and Christopher Bruce’s Rooster (all of which featured as part of the Company’s 75th Anniversary Season at Sadler’s Wells). Seminal works from Rambert’s formative years - including Anthony Tudor’s 1937 masterpiece, Dark Elegies - have also provided inspiration, and one group has worked with the Rambert dancer and choreographer, Glenn Wilkinson, whose high- octane Twin Suite 2 received its premiere at the Linbury Studio Theatre in May. On 29 June all the groups join forces at the Lilian Baylis Theatre for two celebratory performances.
Rambert Education’s programme includes schools’ workshops and residencies, teacher training, pre-show talks, lecture demonstration performances, evening classes, masterclasses, the annual summer school (see enclosed) and the supply of a range of specialist resources for teachers and students. Rambert Education also frequently mounts large-scale performance projects with local communities, both in theatres and in more unusual locations, including National Trust properties and underneath Hammersmith Flyover.
Spring Forward / Fall Back: Lilian Baylis Theatre at Sadler’s Wells, Friday 29 June 2001 at 5pm and 8pm. Tickets: £4 (£3 cons) from Sadler’s Wells Ticket Office: 020 7863 8000 / www.sadlers-wells.com
For further details about Spring Forward / Fall Back, or any aspect of Rambert Education’s work, please contact Rambert Education: 020 8630 0615 / education@rambert.org.uk
