Stuart adds (by way of explanation): You may have seen that we mention this dancer in the Staff Room preamble, which resulted in this question:

quote:
Are you sure that's the way to spell Vakhtang Chabukiany

Who is Vakhtang Chabukiany?

[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited May 28, 2001).]

So, I have a bit of time to fool around amidst the chaos. Guess what popped up first on a Yahoo! search:
http://google.yahoo.com/bin/query?p=chabukiany&hc=0&hs=0

Here are the results on Google:

Chaboukiani

Interesting that according to my dictionary, he mounted Swan Lake for the National Ballet of Persia in Teheran, 1971. I had a ballet classmate who was in that.
Babs - when I saw the title to this thread - I thought we were going to have to iron clothes or something..........

How bizarre that this major figure in the Russian ballet world should be represented first on Yahoo by a klutz like me making a joke.
In my Oxford Dictionary of Dance he gets a column to himself. He was the leading male dancer at the Kirov in the 1930s and I have seen a brief bit of film of him dancing. The Oxford says that he was an athletic and vigorous dancer ad they're not kidding - this guy moved at about half the speed of light.
After the Kirov he returned to his home in Georgia and ran the opera house in Tbilisi, dancing until he was in his 50s, choreographing a range of work and he was also a significant teacher. He has left his mark - in 1947 he re-worked the role of Solor and the male variations in the Bayadere and the Oxford says that what we see today owes more to him than Petipa. He also re-choreographed much of the male variations in 'The Corsaire'.
The Soviet ballet world emerged into the West in the 50s when he had stopped dancing with the Kirov. I guess that this is why we don't hear that much about him. The strongest memory of the Bolshoi when they came to the UK was the power of the men and it looks as though Vakhtang was an important part of that tradition.
All in all quite a dude.
[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited April 13, 2001).]

I believe I've read about what an illustrious teacher he was as well.
