The ROH reopened in great style with a Gala Evening for the glitterati. however, a lot of us were rather surprised that Mrs. Thatcher was there, given her complete indifference to the Arts both in and out of power. Unfortunately, I was at Sadler's Wells watching Rambert and so missed the televising of the big event.
For the time being, everyone is full of praise for the new complex and I have my fingers crossed that the notoriously bad sight-lines have been really improved. At least the stalls have a good rake now.
Everyone is agreed that in the second half The Royal Ballet put on a much more successful show than The Royal Opera. A good way to start given the gross disparity between the two art forms in the past. Someone actually suggested that it be renamed the Royal Ballet House and even the opera critic of The Guardian had to admit that his art form had come out a bad second.
http://www.newsunlimited.co.uk/reviews/story/0,3604,109974,00.html
Judith Mackrell describes the ballet action below:
http://www.newsunlimited.co.uk/reviews/story/0,3604,109975,00.html
