Searching around on Google Video I found this clip online of the Kirov in a 1968 Swan Lake.

Kirov Video clip

I didn't recognize the dancers, but a little more investigation turned up the name of Yelena Yevteyeva. Can anyone confirm that? Apparently the film was supposed to be of Natalia Makarova but at the last moment Yevteyeva replaced her.

Here's a NYTimes reviewof the DVD of the 1968 production.

Sorry, I guess google doesn't let you post the direct link. Type "Kirov" into the search box, ther are only 4 results, so you should see it.

fedora, after you search for "Kirov", select the video clip that says "TV + Classical Music" for the "Swan Lake" excerpt.

ME, that is indeed the Yevteyeva/Markovsky performance. Too bad there are no scenes with the Jester -- Valery Panov made that role something special.

djb, couldn't agree more about Valery Panov - his jester is a poet. I have that video and it is among the most played in my collection.

Fedora, thank you so much for starting this thread and for finding those wonderful video clips. :D :D :D

Dumchenko looked so beautiful, when I saw her last year she was a disappointment, I'm so very happy that she has recovered her form.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen this recording. To tell you the truth, I haven’t seen a totally convincing Jester by any company yet. He is usually portrayed as just that - a jester, or a loyal friend. And he certainly is both. But I believe that he is more, much more than that...

To me too, Cassandra, the Jester is a Poet, dancing Mercutio, if you like. This is the role with great potential, waiting to be “discovered” or rediscovered by some talented artist!

You've just described what I felt about Panov's interpretation.

Hi Mehunt!

YES - it is Yelena Yevteyeva as Odette/Odile and Alla Ossipenko's husband, John Markovsky as Siegfried. Besides Panov :D , there are priceless cameo appearances of none other than Tatyana Terekhova as one of the Cygnets, Galina Mezentseva in the last line of the swan corps, and Ludmilla Semenyaka in the garland waltz from Act 1 :D :D :D :!:
You must really keep your eyes peeled for these three greats :!: Wonderful performance :!: For me, the only drawback is the scenery and costumes. IMO they're very "Soviet" (ie. gloomy). They're aren't the visually stunning scenery and costumes by Igor Ivanov and Galya Solovieva.

Wow! Thanks for the insights Cygne -- I'll go look again right now. What fun to see those ballerinas just starting out!

Fedora (sorry - I initially addressed this to Cassandra), I realized that my last post was unclear. What I meant was that Panov was what you were looking for and had never found.

I enjoyed Yefteyeva's performance very much, but did not like the decor and costumes.

[quote="fedora"] As it happens I don't even own a VHS player, only DVD player, just like most of us never owned a record (remember that funny commercial?)

How young are you, Fedora!? :D _
