At the Maryinsky, a second soloist is someone who has emerged from
the coryphee rank. The promotion order is: 1) Corps de ballet, 2) coryphee, 3) 2nd Soloist, 4) 1st Soloist and 5) Principal Dancer. In France, a second soloist at the MT would be classified a "sujet" between coryphees and premiers danseurs. After premiers danseurs there's the top tier: The etoiles, (at POB that is). Rank classification probably varies with other French companies.

I hate to burst everyone's bubble but Obraztsova is still a choryphee. This was confirmed to me by the Mariinsky press office when I asked if her listing as 'choryphee' in the latest Mariinsky Festival Souvenir Booklet was a typo. "No -- she is in fact a choryphee," I was told.

Hopefully this will be rectified soon, given her string of successes in leading roles (Juliet, Ondine, Sylphide, Approximate Sonata, etc.).
