There's a short mention in the News section of the Kirov website of President Bush's visit last night to the Maryinsky Theatre.

The Nutcracker cast last night was Natalia Sologub and Andrian Fadeyev.

There were some beautiful shots of the Mariinsky theater on Fox News - both inside and out. Showed both President Bush and Putin in the Imperial Box in the theater.
Also some beautiful footage of the visit to the Hermitage and some of the magnificent interiors.
I wonder why they chose Nutcracker. I know they often do Nutcracker other than at Christmas time.

Maybe they thought it was about all he could handle. Image
Seriously though, it seems like whenever there's a foreign dignitary visiting a country, if they go to the ballet, they always take him or her to see Swan Lake or Nutcracker, or something big and non-controversial, no? I think I remember reading in the Plisetskaya biography about how she danced Swan Lake endlessly for visiting heads of state.

I do remember reading in Plisetskaya's autobiography that she danced over 800 Swan Lakes - many, many for heads of state.
Strange as it may seem to us now, Nutcracker was not always given at Christmas time. This was true not only in Russia but also in the West.
There is more of that history here:

From Casse Noisette to Nutcracker
