Our trusty secret source in LA has come through again with a peek at a profile of Diana Vishneva from the LA Times. The actual article is a premium service (have to pay to read). They talk about the grueling 24-hour flight from Russia and apparently Vishneva came straight to Berkeley after doing a Juliet in Finland with Vladimir Malakhov! Here is a quote:

by Chris Pasles

But when she starts talking about dance and the Maryinsky, she shakes off her
fatigue and becomes animated and excited.

"Some people say, 'Enjoy your life, enjoy your dancing on stage and just be
happy,' " she says, speaking through an interpreter as she relaxes in the
back of a limousine speeding to Berkeley. "That's not enough for me. My
concept of dance is pretty far from just enjoying it. I need to express my
internal feelings, and this is more important than just enjoying being on

As for stardom: "I never can do that alone. I have behind me the whole
company, the coaches, the teachers, the partners with whom I am dancing. I
always remember I represent the Maryinsky Theater. All that I have is because
I am from there. It's an honor for me to be one of the presenters of the
Maryinsky Theater."
The piece goes on to talk about how Vasiev really nurtured three ballerinas after he started to as Artistic Director: Lopatkina, Zakharova and Vishneva... "All vastly different."

The article can be accessed from the main arts page here, but if anyone can find a better more direct link, please do post!

By the way, for any Los Angeles locals who also dance, apparently someone from the company will be offering a master class in that city this week.

After a quick huddle, the CriticalDance team decided that we had inadvertently breached our "no gossip" rule in this topic. So some judicious pruning has taken place and the relevant posters notified.

On with the Kirov discussion.

Daria Pavlenko is now officially gone from the initially anounced casting. :( That was to be expected though, since she was scheduled for "Bayadere" in London almost immediately after these "Bayaderes" in Los Angeles - I thought she *might* skip out to rehearse Makarova's version or something like that, but hoped she would at least stay for opening. I was kind of bummed with the Royal Ballet anounced they had replaced Bussell's performances in "Bayadere" with Pavlenko, since I knew that would inevitably mean that Southern California would probably lose her. I'm looking forward to seeing Vishneva on Wednesday and Sofia Gumerova in the Saturday/Sunday casting though - she was radiant as Odette/Odile in London.

Does anyone know if Pavlenko is scheduled to return to the tour in time for "Jewels" at Orange County? "Jewels" begins the Friday after her "Bayadere" in London. I desperately hope she'll dance those dates as planned...

The info I have is that Pavlenko is scheduled to dance two Bayaderes (Opposite Roberto Bolle) on October 21 and 31, so unfortunately, prospects on this coast are a little dim...

Can any of our UK friends confirm those two dates?

Regarding the Los Angeles Times story about Diana Vishneva above; I just got time to finally look through my print copy of the story in the Sunday LA Times. There is an absolutely gorgeous, full page (we're talking the entire, full broadsheet-sized cover of Calendar Part II), full color portrait photograph of Diana Vishneva gracing the front of the story. She's not in costume but in a casual black outfit and she looks extremely fashionable, chic and attractive. It's a great photograph, and a great eye-catcher for a ballet story - a wonderful change from the standard in-costume tutu shots. A small version of it is available online if you can get into the site, otherwise find yourself a copy of last Sunday's LA Times!

Oh yes - and Pavlenko is confirmed for both Oct 21 and 31 in London. I was just hoping (perhaps dreaming) that she might come back for Jewels in between then...*sigh*

I am glad to see that Diana Vishneva has been cast for the first 2 performances of La Bayadere. She is a sublime Nikiya, the best that the Kirov can offer now that Zakharova has left and that Lopatkina isn't dancing this role. I saw her twice in the reconstructed production of La Bayadere in the past year, in the Kirov's New York season as well as in this year's Mariinsky Festival in St. Petersburg.

It's a pity that I can't read the LA Times article on Vishneva.
