Stockholm’s Dance Museum
Situated opposite the Royal Opera House, the Dance Museum is one of the liveliest and most imaginative museums in Stockholm. It has recently been nominated museum of the year, it is almost unique in being solely devoted solely to dance, and now the government wants to move it.
The Swedish government who owns the building say they need the premises while some of their offices are renovated. There is plenty of office space for them in the upper floors but they also want the ground floor museum premises - just for the occasional function. Dance does not have a high profile in government circles and this is a thoughtless decision by bureaucrats who think dance doesn’t matter. Founder of the Museum, Rolf de Maré
The museum has a magnificent permanent collection of costumes and dance artefacts. The extensive archives are used by researchers from all over the world. Among the recent temporary exhibitions was a spectacular Ballet Russes exhibition which featured original costumes – the museum has the most extensive collection outside of the V & A in London – archive and current film footage. Over the ten years that the museum has been in these premises they have built up a warm and welcoming atmosphere enhanced by a well stocked dance shop and a popular cafe maintained by a small staff of dedicated workers and volunteers. A move, even temporarily, will mean building up all over again. A petition is being circulated and hopefully, with protests from dance lovers all over the world, it may show the government that there are people around the world who care about dance. Here is the link to the petition.
Sorry it only comes in Swedish. You are asked for name (namn) ort (place) e-mail and website (if you have one). You are then asked to write out the two words in distorted script. It's the usual stuff. http://upprop.nu/YMVJ Thank you for your support.
