I saw SFB perform Robbins In the Night last year and the third couple, Sarah Van Patten and Pierre-François Vilanoba, had the audience almost in tears. I read a review of SFB's performance of the same ballet in New York and the third couple, Lorena Feijoo and Pierre-François Vilanoba, had the audience laughing out loud. (see the review below)

How is it that the same piece can elicit such drastically different responses from an audience? Obviously there's something different about the dancer's interpretation, but can it be so different to elicit tears one evening and laughter the next?

The more I learn about this art form the less I seem to understand.
